Beyond the Binary: Trans and Gender Diverse Health

Wednesday, March 3, 2021

In recent years, rights and protections for transgender and non-binary people in the United States have seen monumental gains and at times faced significant setbacks, which often create barriers to accessing essential health services. Despite meaningful progress and growing awareness around the health needs of trans and non-binary people, these populations still face persistent health disparities, discrimination in accessing care, and a scarcity of trans-competent and gender-affirming care. To discuss these issues and ways forward, HPA was joined by Dr. Mitzi Hawkins and Jenna Raques, MPH. Listen to the moderated discussion.
Native & Indigenous Voices in Healthcare

Native & Indigenous Voices in Healthcare

Tuesday, May 25th, 2021

Since the birth of this nation, Native American and Indigenous people have been persecuted, displaced from their homelands, and killed. It is not surprising that these communities are disproportionately affected by a series of health disparities, compounded by a dramatic lack of representation in the health workforce. To this day, the voices of Native and Indigenous people are often missing at decision-making tables and, as a result, many of their needs remain unheard and unaddressed. Adrienne Schuler, an aspiring physician, and Coty Brayboy, a public health nurse consultant, will talk with HPA’s director, Dr. Fernández-Peña and MSA’s Aaron Golding about their journeys into the health workforce as Native people.
