How does the NLRB ruling impact you?
In August 2016, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled that graduate students at private universities are statutory employees within the meaning of the National Labor Relations Act.
Northwestern University has always regarded its graduate students as students, first and foremost, and has been steadfast in its commitment to support, mentor, and train them. Classifying students as employees will significantly change the relationship between students, their faculty mentors, and the University. Northwestern believes that unionization and collective bargaining are not the appropriate methods to address graduate student concerns, and may result in an environment that inhibits both the success of our graduate students and of University.
We encourage all graduate students to learn as much as they can about this issue, ask questions, express opinions, and thoughtfully consider all options prior to taking any action. Use this site as a key resource to stay informed, and please direct any questions to TGS-Inquiries.
