Northwestern researchers are making incredible progress in efforts to combat dementia and extend human healthspan, by focusing on what goes right in some brains as they age.
We set out to create a science-first, visually-driven research feature that pulled at both the mind and the heartstrings.

Northwestern Magazine embarked on an extended process of reporting and shooting that resulted in a large-scale integrated multimedia print and digital feature.

CNN picked up this press release and leveraged our existing multimedia assets.

A long interview on PBS Newshour’s “Horizons” program also used our assets.
We used these assets to craft a :30 second PSA for broadcast TV, with a new narrative to support our “Take a Northwestern Direction” campaign. We generated a custom URL to encourage TV viewers to visit the story and enjoy our coverage.
The feature was published in print and digital, and the assets were customized and repurposed in multiple social media posts across platforms, resulting in 190.8K video views, 5.9K engagements, and 654.2K reached in total.
The story also garnered 2,791 clicks in the Northwestern Magazine email newsletter, the second highest total of any newsletter story of the year.
It also received the most comments and letters of any 2024 story, as we heard from potential study participants and others.
