Photography Grant

The Global Learning Office (GLO) photography grant is given to Northwestern undergraduate students participating in Northwestern Programs or Northwestern Exchanges. Students will produce photo content from their study abroad experience to be used for GLO projects, like social media engagement and program promotion.

Award Details

Award of $150 disbursed following study abroad experience, contingent upon the quality of work provided.

Eligibility

The GLO photography grant is open to all Northwestern undergraduate students who have confirmed their participation in any Northwestern Program or Northwestern Exchange and who will have full access to photography equipment during their study abroad experience. Many smartphones have cameras that are adequate for this grant. (Journalism Residency programs abroad and affiliated programs are not eligible).

Application Deadlines

The GLO photography grant application deadlines are as follows:

Summer, Fall, or Full-Year programs April 20
Summer programs April 20
Winter programs August 20
Winter-Spring programs November 1
Spring programs January 5

Guidelines

To be considered for the grant, students should submit five (5) original photos on any topic; photos may be edited. Photos may be samples from coursework, the student’s work portfolio, or taken primarily for the purpose of this grant. Consideration for the grant is contingent upon the student being accepted into the ULA Northwestern program to which they applied. Photos should be submitted through the GLO photography grant application.

Grant recipients must be able to supply their own photography equipment (access to photo editing software upon return from study abroad experience recommended, but not required). Recipients will be expected to take photo content that captures the academic and cultural experience of the country where they are studying abroad (i.e. cultural immersive experiences, experience of studying at their host university, field trips and outings, etc…).

The time commitment for this project is estimated at 15hrs, which includes the time spent taking photographs while abroad as well as organizing photos into categories, adding captions and credits, and editing photographs. Grant recipients are expected to turn in their final project approximately 4 weeks after the program ends.

The grant will be disbursed upon student’s return, following GLO approval of the photography content supplied.
