| Program Description: |
Partner with real communities, learn by doing, and have the experience of a lifetime—this is what the ENGAGE Uganda summer program offers. ENGAGE Uganda enables three teams of three to five students to partner with host organizations around Uganda to develop and collaboratively implement projects that add value to local communities and provide a context for learning important lessons about community development, team leadership, cross-cultural collaboration, colonial history, and more. Group reflection sessions, workshops and seminars with local community leaders and Northwestern faculty members, and a mandatory pre-departure seminar during the Spring Quarter round out this unparalleled immersive learning experience.
The ENGAGE Uganda program invites a special kind of student that is ready to take his/her global engagement to the next level. Family homestays allow students to build deep and lasting relationships with local Uganda community members. Three program summits allow different project teams to observe what their peers are doing and see Ugandan society from multiple vantage points. Group projects challenge students to take risks, lead a team, collaborate with partners, and ask the core questions about what it means to make an impact in the world. The program also includes group excursions that change from year to year (raft the Nile, treck gorillas, hike Sipi Falls, etc.). |
