| Program Description: |
This charming Provençal town near Avignon and Marseille has a rich history, beautiful architecture, and an exciting contemporary culture. In the summer, when the French flock to vacation homes in the area, Provence is alive with dance, music, theater, and folklore festivals. This program, developed by IES with help from Northwestern’s Department of French and Italian, links coursework to cultural excursions throughout Provence. In a city famous for its Roman theatre and arena, and associated with van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, and Picasso, students may dine together in local cafés and restaurants, attend Arles’ international photography festival, interview residents for course projects, and participate in events at the Roman arena. Homestays facilitate cultural integration and enhance linguistic skills.
