The Institute for the International Education of Students (IES)
Web site: IES Berlin Program Page
Location: Berlin, Germany
Terms:

Fall Semester, Winter-Spring Quarters, Full Year

Specific Program/Language Requirements:
  • Fall Semester, Full Year: 2 years or equivalent of college German; Winter-Spring Quarters: 2.5 years or equivalent of college German

Northwestern Requirements for this program: Full Year students must take at least one regular course at the University during the fall and two during the spring. Students staying for Winter-Spring Quarters only must take at least one regular course at the University. We encourage you to take more if you think you are up to the challenge. A “regular course” is defined as a course taught in the host language, for local university students (not study abroad students). This will allow you to experience what it is like to be a local university student!

IES Program Requirements:

  • 3.0 GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale) and in good standing at home college or university.
  • Sophomore, junior, or senior standing when program begins. Some local university courses may not be available to students of sophomore standing. Please contact your IES representative for more details.
  • 4 semesters or the equivalent of college-level German required for fall or academic year students enrolling in German-taught or University courses.
  • 5 semesters or the equivalent of college-level German required for spring semester students enrolling in German-taught or University courses.

Additional Information:

Study Abroad in Germany: Term Options

  • The German Department and the Study Abroad Office strongly encourage students to study abroad in Germany for the full year
  • If students can only study abroad in Germany for one term, we encourage them to do so during the spring semester (winter-spring quarters at Northwestern) for two reasons: First, spring semester students are better prepared in terms of language since they go to Germany with more German language background (assuming they take German the fall quarter before they study abroad, which we also strongly recommend). Second, spring semester students can enroll in regular university courses in Germany.
  • If winter-spring is not an option, we encourage students to study abroad on the Antioch-Tuebingen program during Northwestern's fall and winter quarters, so that they can enroll in integrated university courses (which run until late January/early February).
  • Students for whom neither of these terms is an option may study abroad during Northwestern's fall quarter only on IES-Freiburg and IES Berlin.

Note: All IES programs provide internship opportunities.
