| Specific Program/Language Requirements: |
- Required: 2.5 years of Spanish (7 quarters, including Spanish 199)
- Recommended: completion of one 200-level class
- If you think you might declare a major or minor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, either before studying abroad or once you return, we encourage you to meet with a study abroad adviser in the Department before you leave. To arrange an appointment, contact the Department at 847-491-8249.
- You must enroll in at least one language course, or one course taught in the official language, throughout your program

| Program Description: |
The Chilean Universities Program gives students the unique opportunity to study at three universities in Santiago. With all the privileges of a degree-seeking student, participation in activities with the local student population allows for greater immersion, academically and culturally. In addition to the University courses an Advanced Spanish program course, designed specifically for IFSA-Butler students, is required.

| Academic Specialties of this program: |
Students may take courses in one or all of theses universities:
- Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile: An urban university with 17,000 students, PUC is strong in business, social sciences and natural sciences.
- Universidad de Chile: One of the oldest and largest universities in Chile. Students can choose from courses in social sciences, philosophy, literature and art.
- Universidad Diego Portales: One of Chile’s best known private universities that has more than 9,000 students with courses offered in business, engineering, fine arts, liberal arts, sciences and social sciences.

| Course Type: |
Direct enrollment, facilitated by IFSA-Butler, in courses at one or all of the above Universities. One mandatory course: Advanced Spanish Grammar, Composition, and Conversation, a course designed especially for IFSA-Butler students studying in the Chilean Universities Program. A second program course and research option is also available.

- Students also have the option of doing an independent research project worth 6 semester credits on a topic of their choice.
- Volunteer opportunities with various organizations, arranged with the help of the IFSA-Butler staff in Santiago.

| Application Requirements for this Program: |
- All study abroad students must complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. Call (847-467-6400) or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and net ID) to be registered for this quiz.
- After completing the 101 Quiz with a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application is not available online.
- Students must complete the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad by the specified deadline.
- In addition, IFSA-Butler requires students to complete a Program Application. This application (and specified deadline) can be found on the IFSA-Butler web site.
- Students who are accepted to the program should start their visa process as early as possible because obtaining a Chilean visa can take a long time.
