Study
Abroad Office Mission Statement / Principles
The Northwestern University Study Abroad Office enriches
the undergraduate curriculum by providing students with
rigorous immersion opportunities abroad. These transformative
experiences shape the way students think about themselves,
their communities, and the world.
We work with faculty and administrators in all six
Northwestern schools to:
1) Provide optimal experiences abroad that combine learning
inside and outside the classroom.
2) Work with study abroad students before they leave
and after they return to help integrate their experiences
into their Northwestern undergraduate careers.
3) Advise students about their study abroad options
and assist them in finding the programs that best meet
their needs.
4) Continuously assess and improve study abroad at Northwestern.
The Northwestern University Study Abroad Office strives
to be creative, proactive, and responsive, and to emulate
and set best practices in the education abroad field.

Study Abroad Office
Bill Anthony, Director
A former Williston Academy exchange
student at a Gymnasium in Heilbronn, Germany,
Bill is a graduate of Colby College (BA 1971)
and The Johns Hopkins University (PhD 1982). He's
been a member of the Northwestern faculty since
1986, serving as a College Lecturer and the Director
of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of
German in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.
His teaching specialties ranged from language
instruction to the history of the German literary
fairy tale. Bill's been a Faculty Fellow at the
International Studies Residential College as well
as Willard Residential College, where he's taught
tutorials on oral history and academic folklore.
In the early 1990s, Bill produced a number of
cultural documentaries with a colleague in the
German Department--oral histories of contemporary
life and recent history in Germany and Switzerland.
Then in 1995, in recognition of his teaching,
Bill was named a Charles Deering McCormick University
Distinguished Lecturer. Two years later, he helped
Northwestern open its first Study Abroad Office
and he takes great pleasure in being part of a
team of dedicated study abroad administrators
and colleagues across all six undergraduate schools,
who actively promote international education to
our undergraduates.
