On Nov. 12 the Alumnae of Northwestern University presented its 2006 Alumnae of the Year Award to Christine Brennan (J80, GJ81), an author, award-winning sports columnist for USA Today and commentator for ABC News, ESPN, NPR and Fox Sports Radio, during a reception at the John Evans Alumni Center. A member of the Medill School of Journalism’s Hall of Achievement, Brennan is a leading expert on the Olympics and women’s sports issues. The Alumnae continuing education winter quarter courses begin Jan. 4 and will cover the Weimar Era: An Interface of Politics, Culture and the Arts; Vietnam: History, Society and Culture; Making a Difference: Definitive Moments in Global History; and The Comic Mask: The Theater’s Answer for the Human Dilemma Called Life.

At the Council of One Hundred annual fall meeting, held Sept. 28–29 on the Chicago campus, members welcomed Elizabeth Evans (L90), the executive director of the Illinois Network of Charter Schools, who discussed the impact of charter schools on public education. In conjunction with its fall meeting, the Council of One Hundred also hosted a young alumni and student event featuring trial attorney, Court TV anchor and author Rikki Klieman (C70).

Members of the NUMBALUMS (Northwestern University Marching and Band Alumni) board attended a workshop on the Evanston campus Sept. 7–8 to discuss plans to support the University’s band program. They also held a student welcome picnic Sept. 9. The club’s CD, Hail to Purple: A 50-Year Retrospective of the Northwestern University “Wildcat” Marching Band, is still available for sale in time for the holidays. Proceeds fund special projects within the University band department. The cost of the disc is $16, including sales tax (add $4 for shipping and handling within the continental United States and $5 outside the continental United States). To order, send a letter including your name, mailing address, desired quantity and payment to NUMBALUMS CD Order, c/o Northwestern Alumni Association, 1800 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL, 60208.
