The Alumnae of Northwestern's winter quarter continuing education courses begin Jan. 3, 2006, on the Evanston campus. Classes at the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art include Early Religious Art with former Northwestern art history professor Julie Harris and The Life of the Spirit in French and Italian Cinema with Thomas Simpson, assistant chair for Italian and director of language study in Italian. At the Norris University Center, Cynthia Robin, assistant professor of anthropology, presents The Ancient Maya, and faculty from various departments teach Profiles in History, a study of nine historical figures whose lives shaped the times in which they lived.

A course on global issues taught by faculty from various departments will be offered in the spring. Other offerings include The Art of the Ancient Americas with anthropology professor Mary Weismantel, South Africa with visiting emeritus professor of history John Rowe, and Dreams, Designs and Development featuring faculty from the McCormick School.

Author and executive consultant Candy Kaelin Deemer (J76, GJ77), syndicated columnist and 2004 NAA Merit Award–winner Lindsey Parker Novak (SCS78) and author and career coach Rob Sullivan (GJ90) headlined the Oct. 19–20 Council of One Hundred annual fall meeting on the Evanston campus. The annual meeting also included an address by School of Education and Social Policy Dean Penelope Peterson and the Fall Etiquette Banquet, co-sponsored by the Northwestern Class Alliance at the Norris University Center.

Despite rainy weather, more than 100 students, alumni and friends turned out for NUBAA's Black Family Reunion welcome party Sept. 25, co-sponsored with the student organization For Members Only at Northwestern's Annenberg Lounge. During Homecoming weekend, members mingled with students and faculty at the Autumn Harvest reception hosted by African American Student Affairs and held a Homecoming party at 212 on the River in Chicago Oct. 28.

In February 2006 members are invited to attend campus events in honor of Black History Month. More information can be found through the African American Student Affairs web site, www.northwestern.edu/aasa.

Members should also check NUBAA's web site, www.alumni.northwestern.edu/nubaa, for information about the commemoration of the May 1968 protest that brought diversity issues before the University administration and the spring 5K run to raise funds for improvements at the Black House on the Evanston campus.

Members of NUGALA (Northwestern University Gay and Lesbian Alumni) celebrated Halloween weekend Oct. 28 at the 10th anniversary LGBT Homecoming bash at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago. During Reunion Weekend, club members gathered at Tommy Nevin's Pub in Evanston on Sept. 24.
