If you notice any frayed insulation that may be asbestos, please contact Facilities Management so we can arrange for inspection and proper removal or encapsulation. The Energy Management section of the HVAC Shop manages the heating and ventilating systems for buildings connected to the Direct Digital Control (DDC) network. This network allows the HVAC systems to be electronically controlled and adjusted from a remote location via computer. Fan units and other components can be scheduled to be off when specific areas are not in use which helps conserve energy while keeping the building comfortable. Since adjustments often can be made without sending a technician out to the location, the response time can be quicker. [ Back to top ] Lock ShopThe Lock Shop is responsible for all lock repairs, installations, replacements, and re- keying requests. They also cut keys, repair door hardware such as door closers, hinges, and door knobs, as well as repairing file cabinet and desk locks. As new buildings open and others are remodeled, Facilities Management is installing locks using the Medeco system. These are high security locks that are pick and drill resistant and have a patented key control system. The key control system means that no one other than Northwestern University can legally make duplicates of the Medeco keys. If your department is interested in these systems or other security upgrades, please contact Facilities Management for a consultation. Electronic access locks are another type of lock being installed on campus and is identified as the Marlok system. This is an electronic access control system where the keys are programmed rather than cut to allow access to specific areas or rooms. The Marlok system can provide audit trails (who accessed which room at which time) as well as time zones (only allowing access during specified hours). If your department is interested in these systems or other security upgrades, please contact Facilities Management for a consultation at facilities-management@northwestern.edu, or by calling 847-491-5201. [ Back to top ] Paint ShopThe Paint Shop processes and supervises all painting requests for the University. They also hang wall coverings and perform all standard scheduled building decorating. The type of paint and the colors are chosen according to University standards in order to make maintenance as efficient as possible. In some cases, special colors may be requested at an additional cost to the requesting department although the colors still must be compatible with the standard colors used throughout the building. Unless the requested work is part of the normal building decorating cycle or is necessary due to normal wear and tear, the department will be charged for requested painting services. The Paint Shop also provides various signage used throughout the University. This includes office signs, such as engraved door and desk nameplates or room numbers and interior and exterior building identification signs. A variety of engraved or decal types are available and most existing styles, including A.D.A., can be matched.
