Northwestern University owns all campus spaces, which it assigns to schools, departments and individuals.
Space assignments are subject to review at any time, with the possibility that space will be re-assigned at the request of a faculty member, Chair, Dean or Provost. The Provost is the ultimate arbiter of how and to which operations space is assigned.
Official record and designation of space assignments
Our Office of Planning is the data steward for the University’s space inventory.
- For new construction, renovations and changes within University-owned buildings, we assign room numbers, confirm and record the area of a room, and review and enter the type/use of space into SIMS (Space Information and Management System). For room number assignment, confirmation of room square footage, and changes in the designated type/use of a room, contact Kevin Grzyb, Space Information Manager.
- Report changes in assignment, loan of space between schools/departments, or desired lease of space outside properties owned by the University to Paul Weller, Director of Facilities Management Planning.
Calculation of square footage
At Northwestern University, square footage is either net assignable square footage (nasf) or gross square footage (gsf).
Rentable square footage (rsf) outside Northwestern University, i.e., leased space in Evanston and Chicago, must conform to BOMA standards. Before considering the rental of space, please contact Paul Weller, Director of Facilities Management Planning, or Ranee Berliant, Property Manager.
