Jacobs Center construction to begin in April

The contractor will put up fencing around the exterior beginning March 18, 2024.

With construction activities set to begin on the Donald P. Jacobs Center during the first week of April, the contractor — Bulley & Andrews — will begin to secure the work site by erecting a construction fence around the perimeter of the facility starting March 18, 2024.

Existing pedestrian sidewalks around the Jacobs Center will remain open during the initial phases of construction. However, all members of the Northwestern community and visitors are urged to use caution when passing by the site on foot, bike, or in a vehicle.

Located at 2001 Sheridan Road at the intersection of Sheridan and Foster Street, the Jacobs Center turns into a hub for research, learning, and student activity. The new facility will expand Northwestern's capacity to innovate in the social sciences and global studies.

The renovation project will transform the interior of the building and significantly enhance the surrounding grounds. Construction will begin in April and is expected to be completed in 2026.

The renovated building will be the new home of the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, the School of Education and Social Policy, the Institute for Policy Research, and several departments within the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences: anthropology, linguistics, political science, and sociology. Additionally, the Weinberg College Center for International and Area Studies and the college’s Program in Global Health Studies will move into the space.

Once complete, the building will serve more than 1,000 faculty and students on a daily basis. It will feature numerous classrooms of varying sizes, meeting and seminar rooms, lab spaces, faculty offices, dining areas, and space for student services. Each floor will offer open seating areas where students and faculty can gather. There will be additional space for student organizations, career fairs, and other activities.
