This academic year, the Northwestern University Women’s Center celebrates 30 years of advancing gender equity at Northwestern and beyond. In recognition of the Center’s critical work at the intersection of the university’s gender equity contestation and betterment over the years, we take up the theme “Critical Intersections” to reflect on and commemorate the Women’s Center’s historic contributions and exciting trajectory for continued growth and development at Northwestern.

Beyond the university, we hope to also engage this critical intersection in US history where women’s, race, gender, and sexuality issues as well as broader struggles for social justice are at the center of national debate. As such, our 30th anniversary theme references Kimberlé Crenshaw’s feminist concept of intersectionality, a critical, complex, inclusive framework within the feminist movement and feminist studies, that will inform our programming throughout our year and serve as theoretical grounding for the center’s work moving forward.

With these interconnected thematic elements in mind, our “Critical Intersections” symposium features two panels that reflect on what it means to do intellectual, political, and community work from different locations. Northwestern faculty, staff, graduate students, alumni and campus units--who are committed to critical feminist, gender, sexuality, and social justice work in their scholarship, teaching, leadership, programming, and other engaged work on campus and beyond--will participate in a day of dialogue and community building that aims to inform and energize our collective work as we strive forward towards equity and justice.
