Chelsea Guzman '23

Chelsea GuzmanChelsea Guzman is a rising junior from Passaic, NJ studying Latinx studies and legal studies at Northwestern University, with an additional fascination for computer science. She is passionate about considering the consequential effects immigration law can have on Latinx communities and the vast intra-ethnic relationships and interactions that occur under the umbrella term “Latinx”. In particular, her research investigates how different Latinx national origin groups interact with one another when they share spaces and the label “Latinx” despite being faced with nuanced lived experiences. During her freshman year, she was a URAP research assistant to her current adviser, Dr. Myrna García, on a project dedicated to how citizenship played a key role in Latinx immigration activism in 1970s Chicago. In addition to being a Mellon Mays Fellow, Chelsea is an ambassador for the Northwestern Knight Community Scholars, a group of first and second-year FGLI scholars and was formerly a Knight Lab Fellow at Northwestern’s Medill School. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a PhD in ethnic studies.
