Janelle Yanez '21

Janelle YanezJanelle is a fourth-year student from North Hollywood, California majoring in Creative Writing in Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. She is interested in the representations of femininity and Blackness in the horror film genre, and how the horror genre is grounds for much political and social dialogue. In addition to being a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow, Janelle is also a QuestBridge Scholar, a mentor in the Black Mentorship Program, and a tutor in a program for under-resourced children in Evanston, where she works with students to establish lasting relationships and a positive outlook on the classroom, reading, and math. After graduation, Janelle plans to pursue a graduate degree in English and plans to one day make the literary arts more inclusive of voices like her own.
