Who is included in the potential bargaining unit?

All Postdoctoral Researchers employed by Northwestern University at the Evanston and Chicago campuses in the following positions: Postdoctoral Scholar and Research Associate.

Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows are considered Postdoctoral Scholars and are eligible to vote, provided they meet all other eligibility requirements. NRSA Postdoctoral Fellows may cast ballots subject to challenge, and the question of their inclusion in the bargaining unit will be decided at a later time.

Who is excluded from the potential bargaining unit?

All other employees, MD-only Postdoctoral Researchers, JD-only Postdoctoral Researchers, Senior Research Associates, Clinical Research Associates, Senior Clinical Research Associates, Clinical Fellows, Feinberg Fellows, Direct Postdoctoral Fellows, Visiting Postdoctoral Fellows, managerial employees, guards and supervisors as defined by the Act.

Please note: The bargaining unit inclusions and exclusions are the product of negotiations between the University and the UE union, and then approved by the National Labor Relations Board. A bargaining unit will be formed if a majority of the votes cast are for union representation. If a majority of the votes cast are against union representation, there will be no union at this time.

Who is eligible to vote?

Postdoctoral Scholars and Research Associates who (a) meet the criteria in the “Included” definition above; (b) do not meet the criteria in the “Excluded” definition above; (c) received pay, via payroll, in the June 2025 monthly (June 30) or July 25, 2025 bi-weekly payroll; and (d) have not quit or been discharged for cause after the designated payroll period for eligibility.

If I am not currently eligible to vote or I am eligible and vote "no", does that mean I won’t be in the bargaining unit if the union is voted in?

Not necessarily. If the union is voted in, Postdoctoral Researchers who are in the position of either Postdoctoral Scholar or Research Associate will be included in the bargaining unit and represented by the union when they meet the bargaining unit definition above during the course of their employment, regardless of whether they voted for the union or whether they voted at all.

What if I believe I am eligible to vote but am not on the eligible voter list?

If you believe you are eligible to vote based on the definition above and are not on the eligible voter list, you may be able to vote subject to challenge at the designated polling site for your primary job location.
