James Phillips selected to be next ACC commissioner

James J. Phillips, the Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation, will become the next commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Phillips has served in his current role since 2012, where he has helped Northwestern student-athletes achieve tremendous success in competition, in class and in the community.

Garrett Gilmer named executive director of CAPS

Northwestern today named Garrett L. Gilmer, currently of Bowling Green State University, the new executive director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). He will begin in his role on Feb. 1, 2021.

In 11 years as director of a comprehensive university counseling center, Gilmer has been a steadfast advocate for inclusion, equity and social justice frameworks relating to student mental health.

Amid the pandemic, interest is up in infectious disease careers

COVID-19 is creating increased interest in infectious disease careers and driving enrollment in undergraduate life sciences, such as medicine, according to academic leaders from the U.S. and Israel.

“We just went through an applications season for fellows, and we had more applicants than in recent years,” said Richard D’Aquila, director of Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS).
