Northwestern aims to launch more women-led spinouts

From Crain's Chicago Business

Nationwide, women inventors made up just 13% of U.S. patent holders in 2019, according to data from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. FoundHer is a new program aiming to combat that trend by helping women faculty members in science, technology, engineering and math commercialize their research and innovations. Creator of FoundHer, Feinberg’s Alexandra de Paz, tells Crain’s Chicago Business the goal of this program is to help and amplify women academic entrepreneurs and innovators at Northwestern University.

Device detects drop in Covid in patients' breath

From The Naked Scientist

As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise, scientists seek new ways to assess the risk of infection. Feinberg’s Gregory Lane developed a device to measure how much virus infected individuals are actually shedding, which can inform behavioral precautions. Lane talks to BBC’s The Naked Scientist about the device, as well as findings about when, during the course of illness, individuals are most infectious.

From Reuters

As Rupert Murdoch departs Fox Corporation and Fox News, analysts speculate the change could provide an opportunity to mend the relationship between Donald Trump and Fox News. However, Medill’s Larry Stuelpnagel tells Reuters he expects the network to be more cautious in their coverage, following a costly lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems.

I’m an American doctor. Here’s why I treat the wounded far from home.

From Samer Attar, The New York Times

“What we as doctors do for a living on the most mundane day is a sacred honor, wherever we do it. It’s unfortunate that it sometimes takes service in wars and disasters to force us to step back to see how terrible the world can be and how good some of us have it. It shows we really are all one community connected through suffering and also how capable we are of helping others through sacrifice,” Feinberg’s Dr. Samer Attar writes in The New York Times.

Biden’s hostage diplomacy, explained

From Danielle Gilbert, Good Authority

“The Biden administration has made clear that they’re willing to weather criticism if it means bringing American captives home. At the same time, they have imposed additional sanctions on former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence for their role in wrongfully detaining Americans. From increasing costs on hostage takers to decreasing risky travel by Americans, the administration is supplementing hostage recovery with efforts to stop future attacks,” Weinberg’s Danielle Gilbert writes in Good Authority.
