Alexander Polzin is a Clinical Assistant Professor within the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Deputy Director of the  Master of Science in Energy and Sustainability Program (MSES) within Northwestern's Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy.  He is also a Steinbrenner Presidential Fellow and doctoral candidate at Carnegie Mellon University, where his research explores the role of design in sustainability transitions.

His professional practice is situated at the intersection of strategy, design and sustainability. He previously worked for McKinsey & Co. where he helped redesign the operations of an energy company and contributed to the firm's thinking on smart forestry. He has also worked for Chicago-based design & innovation consultancy IA Collaborative and at the start-up Worldreader, where he worked with publishers in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa to create a market for digital books.

He has taught at New York University, Carnegie Mellon University, Maryland Institute College of Art and within the Republic of Korea's EPIK program. He holds master's degrees from Northwestern University (MBA + MS in Design Innovation) and the Universitat de Barcelona (MA in Construction and Representation of Cultural Identities) and a bachelor's from Michigan State University's Honors College.
