Sarah Hackett Stevenson, MD

Dr. Sarah Hackett Stevenson graduated from Mount Carroll Seminary and the Illinois State Normal University. She started her career as a teacher and principal at a local school before completing her medical degree at the Women’s Medical College in 1874 in Chicago. She was later appointed professor of physiology and histology and eventually professor of obstetrics. Dr. Hackett was the first female member of the American Medical Association and the first female on staff at the Cook County Hospital.
