Paula Stern earned her PhD in pharmacology from the University of Michigan. Later in 1964 she received a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester as an NIH Fellow.

In 1966, following her fellowship she joined the Northwestern University faculty. During her time at Northwestern, Dr. Stern was awarded two distinct teaching recognitions, the George H. Joost Outstanding Teacher Award and the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence. The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, named the annual Paula Stern Achievement Award in her honor. This award recognizes women who make significant scientific contributions in bone research and who have promoted professional development in and the advancement of other women in the field.
