Arlene Kaplan Daniels, PhD

Dr. Arlene Kaplan Daniels (1930-2012) joined Northwestern faculty in 1975 as a professor of sociology. During her time at NU she also served as the director of women’s studies beginning in 1991. Her research interests included social inequality, sex roles and civilization, and the sociology of education, women’s work lives and feminist networking. Her interests culminated in a book titled Invisible Careers in 1988. Dr. Daniels was also the first female editor of Social Problems and served as President for the Society of the Study of Social Problems In 1995, Dr. Daniels earned the ASA Jessie Bernard Award for work to expand women’s presence in sociological work.
