Alexandra Bellow, PhD

Alexandra Bellow (1935-present) of the mathematics department was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1935. There, her father founded the first clinic of neurosurgery in while her mother was a pioneer in child neuropsychiatry. Dr. Bellow, with a similar inclination towards science and academics, earned a PhD in mathematics from Yale University in 1959 after arriving to the United States two years prior. Dr. Bellow was appointed professor of mathematics in 1968 and was the first woman in the department to be named full professor. In 2012, Dr. Bellow endowed the annual Bellow Lecture Series with the hope of recognized world-class women mathematicians.
