Ryan Fieldhouse and Walter Athletics Center

Project Status: COMPLETED

Construction start: November 2015
Completion: Summer 2018

Project Description & Statistics

The Ryan Fieldhouse, Wilson Field and the Walter Athletics Center create an unmatched environment for Northwestern Wildcats to flourish. Nestled into the main campus in one of the most unique settings, student-athletes will have the ability to both train and compete at the highest level.

The Ryan Fieldhouse will provide one of the most versatile practice, competition, and recreation venues in the nation. The new fieldhouse will have the capacity for not only football practice, but also lacrosse. The consolidation of athletic facilities on the main campus allows for direct adjacencies of the new sports performance facilities for football and Olympic sports, a new sports medicine and athletic training center, and a student-athlete training table. The fieldhouse will also include locker rooms for multiple Wildcats varsity programs and Wilson Field, a full-sized indoor athletic field that will enable Northwestern’s student-athletes to practice and/or compete indoors during inclement weather.

The Walter Athletics Center will house a football strength and conditioning center, complete with meeting rooms and a sport performance center, offices for coaches of numerous varsity teams, a nutrition center and a dining facility. Its Kimberly K. Querrey and Louis A. Simpson Wing will hold the student-athlete development center and dining facility.

Not only will the new facility offer first class training, but also a compliment of spaces including lounges, team meeting rooms and academic services. Integration of these critical components into one facility will streamline the day-to-day flow for each student-athlete and allow continued success on and off the field. The Norris Aquatics Center will see significant improvements: varsity locker rooms, lounges, dry and wet land training areas.

The new complex will provide amazing opportunities to showcase Chicago’s Big Ten Teams with views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. These new facilities will allow Northwestern University to recruit and retain the top student-athletes in the country.
