The Evanston and Northwestern University communities are enjoying a better place to tailgate, gather, stroll and park thanks to a recent initiative by the University to reconstruct the Ryan Field Stadium West Parking Lot located at Ashland Ave & Central St. Improvements are designed to balance the functions of the state-of-the-art athletics facility with the character and scale of Evanston’s Central Street Neighborhood. Previously, the parking lot suffered from poor drainage, substandard light levels and unsightly appearances. Community outreach identified key issues such as desired improvements to pedestrian and vehicular circulation, lighting and landscape screening. The reconstructed 899 space parking lot has been designed to not only comply with best design practices, but also to improve the functionality and appearances of the parking lot for the community. Built features include: Reorganized parking that prioritizes pedestrian access to the stadium entrance; Improvements to perimeter roadways and alley, including: Ashland Ave streetscape, including roadway, sidewalk, lighting, plantings and bus shelter; Central St landscape that references the City’s corridor plan; Isabella St landscape, including screening plantings; Alleyway improvements including pavement reconstruction and landscape screening.
