Students Organized Against Racism
SOAR, or Students Organized Against Racism, is both a key institutional equity initiative at Evanston Township High School (ETHS), as well as a student organization that is open to all those interested in engaging in the institution’s equity work. Through participation, students develop a more comprehensive understanding of the complex interactions and effects of the self and oppressive systems in order to foster a culture and community that is more anti-racist. The SOAR leadership holds two conferences annually, led by ETHS and hosted at Northwestern University, that focuses the discussion on racial consciousness and identity development. Our office provides logistic support for the event, as well as facilitating connections to related Northwestern events and opportunities. Annually, SOAR students are invited to be part of the intergenerational panel discussion about racial justice movements in Chicago as part of Northwestern’s MLK Celebration in collaboration with Campus Leadership and Community Engagement. SOAR is organized by ETHS social science teacher Corey Winchester, SESP alumnus class of 2010 and founding member of Promote 360.
