Social Consciousness Series

Image of a student group wearing matching t-shirts.In an effort to address the marginalized identity of African-American males in today’s society, Evanston Township High School (ETHS) proactively attended to this national crisis by establishing a school-wide, community-involved Black Male Summit in 2014. Since then, three additional racial equity summits have emerged: the Black Female Summit (2015), the LatinX Summit (2016), the Middle Eastern, North African, and  Asian (MENAA) Summit (2016), and the LBGTQ+ Summit (2016). In each of the summits, students are provided the opportunity to engage in dialogue about their racial identity and experience.

Our office supports the trailblazing efforts of ETHS surrounding identity and social consciousness. Each of the summits have been supported by the Partnership Office through securing donations and volunteers, arranging guest speakers, and forging connections to relevant Northwestern programs and initiatives. The Latina & Latino Studies Program collaborates with ETHS for the LatinX Summit. In 2016, Northwestern PIP Fellow Lucero Segundo helped plan and execute the first summit bringing guest speaker Frances Aparicio. In 2017, the ETHS LatinX Student Planning Committee is co-organizing the summit with Northwestern Professor Alejandro Carrion and several of his students. Northwestern’s Middle East and North African Studies department partners with ETHS to coordinate faculty and student volunteers to the MENAA Summit.
