Scientific Images

Capturing the Beauty of Science is an annual contest coordinated by Northwestern University’s Science in Society. Scientists and engineers submit images of their work as art pieces that celebrate the aesthetic nature of scientific data and research. A committee chooses the top 12 winners that tour the Chicagoland area via public exhibitions. These STEM artists gain experience communicating about their work to the public.

The annual gallery opening takes place at Evanston Township High School (ETHS) when ETHS students have the opportunity to interact with the researchers. Teachers in science, engineering and art classes bring their classes to visit the gallery and learn about the research that led to the art. Over 400 students visit the exhibit during these gallery tours. In addition, students in ETHS art classes submit work based on artistic interpretations of the scientific images, including AP Studio Art, AP 3D & Sculpture and 1 Art classes. Physics photos from AP students are also on display from their submissions to the annual American Association of Physics Teachers’ Photo Contest.
