Black Men Lead

Black Men LEAD is an initiative formed in collaboration with ETHS, Northwestern, and Community folks who identify as Black Men. The program began in 2018 with catalyst funding from the Joe “Butch” Martin Family Foundation in celebration of their 10th anniversary. Together with funding from the Daniel I. Linzer Grant for Innovation in Diversity & Equity, Black Men LEAD held its inaugural event as a 2 day convening of Black men, including faculty, staff, and students from both ETHS and Northwestern. The work of Black Men LEAD continues to be supported by the NU/ETHS Partnership Office, in collaboration with The Collective and The Black Graduate Student Association. We host 3 events per academic quarter including social, conversational, and service activities to bring folks together.

The goals of the program include:

  • To serve as a catalyst for convening Black and African-American males in Evanston
  • To offer a platform for Black and African-American men to share their diverse narratives, world-views, and identities
  • To collectively identify, examine, and begin to address common themes that advance Black male student success in high school and college
