AVID Senior College Experience

Image of an instructor teaching students in a classroom. For Northwestern University graduate students enrolled in the Searle Center for Advanced Teaching and Learning certificate program, Evanston Township High School (ETHS) Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) classes provide a unique opportunity to gain practical experience leading an eight-week mini-college course with participating seniors. The Avid Senior College Experience allows the ETHS AVID students the opportunity engage in a college level course taught by an Northwestern graduate student.

This particular partnership vividly elucidates the bi-directional benefits afforded to the students at Evanston Township High School and Northwestern. For students at ETHS, this program allows these soon-to-be high school graduates an opportunity to experience a college-like course load before they even begin their first day of college. For Northwestern graduate students, this opportunity provides a platform to gain valuable, practical teaching experience with soon-to-be college freshman, before they finish their certificate program and begin teaching on their own.

AVID Students also participate in College 101, a day at Northwestern attending a class, visiting various university departments, and having lunch at Allison Hall. For Northwestern graduate students, this opportunity provides a platform to gain valuable, practical teaching experience with soon-to-be college freshman, before they finish their certificate program and begin teaching on their own.
