Interview with ISRS Speaker, Michael Soares
As we get closer to the 2019 Illinois Symposium on Reproductive Science, now just one week away, we look forward to a diverse array of presentations from our distinguished speakers! Featured in this week’s CRS news story, is an interview with Michael Soares, PhD from the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Soares serves as the Director of both the Institute for Reproduction and Perinatal Research and the Center for Perinatal Research, as well as a University Distinguished Professor.
- Your lab is focused on survival strategies used by embryos during development. When did you become interested in this topic?
During my postdoctoral training
- How was the transition from a post-doc researcher to directing your own group?
A learning process – there were skillsets that I needed to develop, especially learning how to work effectively with a diverse group of staff and trainees.
- How do you achieve a good work-life balance?
Achieving a “good” balance does not always come naturally to me and requires some effort.
- What hobbies do you have outside of the lab?
Experiencing the outdoors - hiking
- What do you think will be the next big contribution in the reproductive biology field?
It will likely be connected to our ability to specifically edit the genome
- What would you recommend to junior scientists (PhD/junior postdocs) in order to succeed in their scientific careers?
Have confidence in yourself and your scientific ideas and work hard.
