Interview with CRS Holiday Speaker, Melissa Simon

As we round out another fantastic year, full of growth and change, we look to a true leader for a few last words of wisdom and wonder. Featured in this month's CRS news story, is an interview with Dr. Melissa A. Simon, MD, the Vice Chair for Clinical Research, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Director, Institute for Public Health and Medicine (IPHAM) - Center for Health Equity Transformation; George H. Gardner, MD, Professor of Clinical Gynecology; and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology (General Obstetrics and Gynecology)/Preventive Medicine and Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern University - Feinberg School of Medicine.

  1. What science topic are you most excited to see develop in the future?

I am excited to see further headway made in health equity research. I am personally very invested in seeing this through as I have seen first-hand the impact of accessible healthcare

 

  1. Why/how did you choose your current career path?

I endeavored to become a doctor since my time studying in undergrad, but also wanted to spend time helping those who are unable to get access to healthcare, which spurred my work in heath equity as a pursued my master’s in public health on my way to becoming an MD.

 

  1. What hobbies do you have outside of work?

I have 4 kids, so much of my time is taken up by caring for them, but I do enjoy cooking and eating out.

 

  1. How did you overcome any gender related roadblocks in your career?

Persistence, resilience, grit are all very necessary to overcome gender, race, or any other roadblocks.

 

  1. Why did you choose to pursue your field?

I grew up in a disadvantaged area of Detroit, and I was surrounded by those who could not get the healthcare that they needed. I hope that my work in public health and health equity will be able to extend healthcare to those who can’t yet access it.

 

  1. What do you feel is your best accomplishment?

Getting to where I am today. I am able to practice advocacy and make an impact on the lives of women, trainees, and students.

 

  1. What is a day in the life of Dr. Simon like?

I am a scientist, physician, professor, advocate, mom, and wife. No two days are the same. I enjoy the variety and going at jet speed, so there is never a dull moment.
