Preparing for Departure

Congratulations! You have committed to your study abroad program. Here are the next steps to take as you prepare to leave campus.

Post-Decision Requirements

All students approved to study abroad must complete the following requirements in the GLO application portal prior to departure. If you do not complete your pre-departure requirements, you risk losing your eligibility to study abroad.

Academic Planning

It is essential that you understand the academic rules and policies that influence whether and how you will be able to earn credit from study abroad toward your Northwestern degree.

Billing & Finances

Review information about your Northwestern invoice, program fee, and financial aid, if applicable.

Emergency Contact Information

You must provide the names and contact information for two emergency contacts. GLO may use the information provided in case of emergency and for correspondence purposes. 

Insurance Requirements

Northwestern University requires all undergraduate study abroad students to have GeoBlue Global Health Insurance coverage for the entire period of time they are studying abroad, regardless of any other coverage from parents or Northwestern. For more information, read Study Abroad Health Insurance.

Passport Information

You must enter your information exactly as it appears in your passport.

Passport Upload

You are required to upload a copy of the biographical page of your passport book (page containing your photo, name, date of birth, etc).

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) Registration

Register with the US State Department Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)STEP registrants receive real-time security updates from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. U.S. citizens can also give the U.S. government authority to act if they go missing or are the victim of a serious crime.

Health Assessment

If you are participating on a Northwestern program, Exchange program, or certain partner programs, you are required to complete a health assessment.

This assessment asks you to think about strategies and resources to help you stay healthy abroad and, as necessary, find and consult with applicable support to aid in planning for your health and well-being. It is often possible to make special accommodations while abroad, but you are responsible for identifying your needs and seeking appropriate assistance.
