Creating a Network of Women
Women's Organizations at Northwestern University

There are many organizations at NU that work to support women and their interests. Below is a sampling of those groups.

Women's Center
The Center provides a wide range of services to all students, staff and faculty on both the Chicago and Evanston campuses. The staff strives to build coalitions between women and to provide outreach, educational programming, counseling, advocacy and resource referral to the NU community.

Gender Studies
The Gender Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program within Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Formerly the Women's Studies program, classes remain committed to a conceptual framework that is an outgrowth of feminist scholarship. Contact Katy Weseman at gender@northwestern.edu for more info.

Undergraduate Student Organizations
emPOWER
emPOWER is the Panhellenic Office of Women's Empowerment, a feminist organization comprised of sorority members that places special interest on issues within the sorority system at NU. Contact Katie Ressmeyer, the 2007-8 Acting Director.

Rosh Chodesh Group
Rosh Chodesh Committee plans events for the female sutdents of Norhtwestern in honor of the new Jewish months. There is usally a craft or activity along with a discussion that relates to the month. We've done beading for Adar, watched the Hebrew Hammer for Kislev, and massages featuring Ahava products for Sivan. Contact Talya Mizrahi at Hillel for more information.


Jewish Women's Coalition

JUICE
JUICE is the only feminist magazine on campus, featuring investigative reports, personal stories, artwork, creative writing, and opinion pieces. Those interested in writing, editing, fundraising or helping with layout and publicity are always welcome. Email nufeminists@gmail.com.

Panhellenic Association
The Panhellenic Association is an organization comprised of Northwestern's 13 sororities. Panhellenic promotes the growth of individual chapters and interfraternity relations, while implementing programs that inform and benefit the Northwestern community. Sexual Assault Education & Prevention Program (SAEP)
This team of trained educators provides the NU student community with information regarding sexual violence and assault, including sexual harassment, acquaintance and stranger rape, incest, and relationship violence. Contact Jamie A. Jimenez for more info.

Society of Women Engineers
SWE is a national organization dedicated to promoting interest and encouraging women to pursue the fields of science and engineering. SWE provides support, mentoring, and guidance to women engineers. Contact Jessie Donato, the 2007-8 President, for more info.

College Feminists
College Feminists promote equality through activism and education. The group's mission is to address issues of gender, race, class, sexual orientation and culture by initiating positive changes in all social spaces. The group meets weekly and organizes such events as Take Back the Night and Sex Week. Email nufeminists@gmail.com for more info.

Graduate Student Organizations
American Medical Women's Association (AMWA)
AMWA functions at the local, national and international level to support the advancement of women in medicine and improve women's health. Contact Meghan O'Halloran or Jill Havey, the 2007-8 Co-Presidents, for more info.

Feminist & Women's Coalition
This group is committed to fostering a supportive network for female law students. The organization holds a women's orientation at the beginning of the school year as well as a reorientation mid-semester. The group maintains an "outline bank" and sponsors a mentoring program. The group also holds an annual event which allows students the opportunity to meet with female faculty outside of the classroom.

Kellogg Women's Business Association (WBA): Graduate School of Management (GSM)
The WBA GSM provides professional and personal development opportunities for women at Kellogg through a variety of workshops, speakers, and events. The organization serves as a source of information, networking, and facilitating the exchange of ideas, interests, and resources among its members and the business community.

Kellogg Women's Business Associaiton (WBA): The Manager's Program (TMP)
The WBA TMP is an organization that strives to facilitate and support the academic, professional, and social endeavors of women in The Manager's Program. The WBA is committed to working with faculty, administrators, alumnae, and the greater business community to promote opportunities and increase awareness for women in business.

Medical Students for Reproductive Health and Choice (MSRHC)
MSRHC is concerned about the lack of adequate reproductive health education, and the failure to sufficiently address issues pertaining to abortion, in medical schools. MSRHC focuses on education, progressive sexual-history taking skills, STDs, sexuality issues and contraceptive methods.

Faculty and Staff Organizations
Association of Northwestern University Women (ANUW)
ANUW was founded with the purpose of promoting professional and personal development and networking for women staff at NU. The group produces four newsletters each year, sponsors monthly topical brown bag speakers, and has meetings in the spring and fall of each year. Committee on Women in the Academic Workplace (COWAC)
COWAC was formed in 1995, in response to a report from the Task Force Concerning Women in the Academic Community. COWAC is charged with reporting annually to the president, provost and university community on NU's progress on issues concerning women faculty and staff. Medical Women Faculty Organization (MWFO)
MWFO identifies, defines and studies issues that are relevant to women faculty within the Medical School. They recommend solutions to medical administration as well as organize and sponsor seminars, workshops and programs that focus on women's issues in medicine and academe. This organization seeks to sponsor and engage in activities that allow women faculty and alumnae to be role models for women medical students and graduate medical trainees. Northwestern University Black Wimmin in Action (NUBIA)
NUBIA's mission is to encourage and build up women on campus through the sharing of information and the development of skills. The group provides services and support to black women staff through events on career, health and family. Contact Vadal Redmond at nubia@northwestern.edu for more info.

Organization of Women Faculty (OWF)
The OWF is an activist and support organization which works to improve women's faculty status and working conditions at NU as well as to provide a forum for personal exchanges. OWF holds monthly meetings and presents the Focus on Female Faculty series quarterly. Contact Renee Redd for more info.
