Summer 2003 Music Calendar

Northwestern University’s summer concert highlights include the world premiere of faculty member Dominic Missimi’s new musical revue “Pop-sical” (July 18 to Aug. 10), featuring more than 25 dancers and singers performing Broadway favorites.

Also in July is the National High School Music Institute (NHSMI), which offers a summer music experience for students contemplating musical careers or wishing to sample college-level study. Working with members of the Northwestern University School of Music faculty, these outstanding young musicians perform as soloists as well as in large and small ensembles.

Events listed below will be held on Northwestern’s Evanston campus at either Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive; Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place; Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive; or the Ethel M. Barber Theatre, 30 Arts Circle Drive, as noted below.

JULY 2003

National High School Music Institute (NHSMI) Faculty Musicale, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. John Williams’ “Midway March,” Frank Ticheli’s “An American Elegy” and Carmen Dragon’s arrangement of “America the Beautiful” highlight this concert of American music. Ryan T. Nelson will conduct. Tickets are $4 for the general public; and $2 for senior citizens, Northwestern faculty and staff and full-time students.

Faculty Recital, Rex Martin, tuba, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 3, Regenstein Recital Hall. Tubist Rex Martin has been heard on more than 70 recordings with the Chicago and St. Louis Symphony Orchestras and on more than 3,000 television and radio commercials. Admission is free.

NHSMI Solo and Chamber Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 6, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Ravinia Steans Institute Chamber Concert, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, Lutkin Hall. Each summer the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute invites young artists from around the world to study with its faculty. In cooperation with Northwestern’s National High School Music Institute (NHSMI), the Steans Institute brings several of these rising artists to perform on the Northwestern campus. Admission is free.

Northshore Concert Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The program will feature marches, patriotic tunes, music from Broadway and the movies, and symphonic spectaculars. Lawrence Stoffel will conduct. Tickets are $4 for the general public; and $2 for senior citizens, Northwestern faculty and staff and full-time students.

NHSMI Guitar Recital, 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 11, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Choir, Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 12, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Showcasing this season’s high school talent, the NHSMI Choir, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble present an evening of jubilant works from around the world. Orchestral highlights include Chadwick’s Serenade in F and Vaughan Williams’ “Five Variants on ‘Dives and Lazarus.’” The choir’s program features Scarlatti’s “Exultate Deo,” Robert A. Harris’ “The Silver Swan” and “Jubilate Deo,” the Sanctus from Paul Bassler’s “Missa Kenya,” James McCray’s “Rise Up My Love, My Fair One,” and Joshua Jacobsen’s “Adijo Kerida.” The wind ensemble’s program includes Eric Whitacre’s “October” and Malcolm Arnold’s “Four Scottish Dances” as arranged by the late John P. Paynter, Northwestern’s former director of bands. Admission is free.

NHSMI Solo and Chamber Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

Summer Orchestra, “Inspired by Nature,” 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 13, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The Summer Orchestra will explore two popular orchestral works that savor the beauty of nature -- Mendelssohn’s overture “The Hebrides” (“Fingal’s Cave”) and Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D Major. Also featured is Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. The concert will feature duo-pianists Timothy and Natasha Mah, and conductor Robert G. Hasty. Single tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for full-time students.

Faculty Recital, Michael Burritt, marimba, 7 p.m. Monday, July 14, Regenstein Recital Hall. Assisted by vibraphonist Clay Condon and members of the Northwestern University Percussion Ensemble, School of Music faculty member Michael Burritt performs works by Bach, Dietz and Cage as well as original compositions. Admission is free.

Anders Astrand and the Global Percussion Network, 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, Regenstein Recital Hall. World-renowned Swedish vibraphonist and composer Anders Astrand and his unique ensemble of keyboard percussionists specialize in jazz and contemporary music. The group’s Northwestern concert features a special guest appearance by popular jazz pianist and Northwestern faculty member Michael Kocour. Admission is free.

Summer Band and NHSMI Wind Ensemble, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The Summer Band and NHSMI Wind Ensemble join forces to highlight music of our time. The program includes selections from Leonard Bernstein’s grand scale work “Divertimento” that will be heard in an arrangement for band by Clare Grundman. Also on the program is School of Music faculty member Don Owen’s own “Episode II” for flute and wind ensemble featuring Northwestern alumna, assistant dean and flutist Heather Landes. Don Owens will conduct. Single tickets are $4 for the general public; $2 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $2 for full-time students.

Barber Theater.During the world premiere of Northwestern faculty member Dominic Missimi’s new musical revue, more than 25 singers and dancers will perform favorite selections from contemporary Broadway musicals. Missimi will direct. Single tickets are $25 for the general public; $10 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $12 for full-time students. “Pop-sical” is part of the 2003 Summer Theatre Festival. NHSMI Wind Ensemble and Honors Chamber Ensembles, 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 18, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The NHSMI Wind Ensemble performs Bernstein’s complete “Divertimento” as arranged for band by Clare Grundman. NHSMI String Faculty, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, Lutkin Hall. Three members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra -- violinist Blair Milton, violist Li-Kuo Chang and cellist Stephen Balderston -- team up with pianist Kuang-Hao Huang as members of this summer’s NHSMI string faculty to perform Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G Minor and other chamber music favorites. Admission is free.

Summer Chorus, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. In a collage of accompanied and unaccompanied choral masterpieces from sacred, secular and folk traditions, the Summer Chorus will present music by some of America’s most celebrated composers. This performance will feature conductor Robert A. Harris. Single tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for full-time students.

Faculty Recital: Gerardo Ribeiro, violin, 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 25, Lutkin Hall. School of Music faculty member Gerardo Ribeiro and guest pianist Tatyana Stepanova perform sonatas by Mozart, Fauré and Grieg. Admission is free.

NHSMI Orchestra and Honors Chamber Ensembles, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The NHSMI Orchestra and Honors Chamber Ensembles perform works by master composers including the Overture to Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” and the suite from Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake.” Phil Peters will conduct. Admission is free.

NHSMI Solo and Chamber Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Honors and Solo Recital, 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

Summer Orchestra: “Unfinished Symphonies,” 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The Summer Orchestra will perform Schubert’s two-movement “Unfinished” Symphony (Symphony No. 8 in B Minor) and Schumann’s “Overture, Scherzo, and Finale.” Also on the program is Tubin’s Double Bass Concerto, featuring doctoral student and double bassist Phillip Serna. The performance will be conducted by Robert G. Hasty. Single tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for full-time students.

Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. This festive and lighthearted program, conducted by Mallory Thompson, Northwestern’s director of bands, stays true to the summer concert tradition with beautiful melodies and fun pieces in a variety of styles. The program will include Carmine Pastore’s “Days of Dixie” and J. B. Arban’s “Carnival of Venice” with Northwestern alumnus Michael Hogg as tuba soloist. Single tickets are $4 for the general public; $2 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $2 for full-time students.

NHSMI Piano Recital, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Voice Recital, 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 31, Lutkin Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Jazz Combos, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 31, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Admission is free.

AUGUST 2003

NHSMI Composition Recital, 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Admission is free.

NHSMI Gala Finale, 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. During the NHSMI’s grand finale, students from the summer program will perform an array of music styles and combinations. Conducted by Northwestern faculty member Don Owens, the NHSMI Wind Ensemble will perform his Concerto for Wind Symphony. Also on the program are Lloyd Pfautsch’s “Consecrate the Place and Day” and David L. Brunner’s “Yo Le Canto Todo El Dia” plus two orchestral favorites, Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Capriccio Espagnol” and Brahms’ “Variations on a Theme of Haydn.” Phil Peters and Mary Alice Stollak also will conduct. Admission is free.
