Choosing a Non-Northwestern Summer Study Abroad Program

Non-Northwestern Programs
We require that students interested in non-Northwestern summer study abroad that is NOT on the recommended list below discuss their plans with an adviser in the Study Abroad Office before completing an application. This is to ensure that students are applying to a program from which credit may be transferable to Northwestern. If a student is not interested in receiving Northwestern credit from a non-Northwestern program, then this is not applicable. Students should call the office at 847-467-6400 to make an appointment. We suggest that students meet with an adviser as early as possible, since it can take several months to evaluate certain programs, especially if they are administered directly by foreign institutions.

Searching for a Non-Northwestern Summer Program
When searching for a Non-Northwestern summer program, please pay close attention to the program’s start date. Many summer programs begin in late May or early June, and Northwestern students may not be eligible to participate due to Spring Quarter exams.

Many of the universities and study abroad institutions that run the academic year programs listed on our affiliated list also run summer study abroad programs, including those listed below. A good way to begin your search for a non-Northwestern summer program is by visiting these program web sites:

Some popular summer programs in which Northwestern students have participated in the past are listed below. Prospective summer students are welcome to stop by the Study Abroad Office Resource Library (which is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm) to read the past student evaluations from these programs. If you would like to contact students who have studied on the programs listed below in previous years, please contact Dana Bumpus. Please note that the fact that students have previously participated in these programs does not guarantee that future students will be awarded Northwestern credit, and it does not mean that Northwestern is affiliated with these programs. The Study Abroad Office, a student’s Academic Advisor, and the Office of the Registrar consider each application on a case-by-case basis.

Announcing Summer 2008 Immersion Language Grants (ILG)!

Northwestern University’s Immersion Experience Program is pleased to announce a new undergraduate initiative to promote the intensive and experiential learning of foreign languages. During the summer of 2008, the Office of the Provost will award 10 (ten) Immersion Language Grant ($2,000 each) to help defray the costs of intensive language study, completed abroad or in the United States. Study programs must be at least six weeks in duration and provide a setting where the target language is predominantly spoken. ILGs are intended to enhance and facilitate on-going academic and professional training. All students who apply for a grant will be asked to describe in an essay statement how intensive language study will advance their overall undergraduate education. The application deadline for the ILG is February 1, 2008, one month before the deadline for summer study abroad (March 5, 2008). For more information on Immersion Language Grants, including eligibility requirements and application materials, see www.northwestern.edu/immersion or e-mail immersion@northwestern.edu. For language intensive summer program recommendations, please contact the Study Abroad Office or the Northwestern Council on Language Instruction.
