Applying for Non-Northwestern Summer Study Abroad

Note: Students who do not wish to receive Northwestern credit for summer study abroad do not need to apply through Northwestern.

If you want to apply for a non-Northwestern summer study abroad program (which means any summer program not run by or affiliated with Northwestern), you must do the following by March 5, 2008:

  1. Take the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard and score a 90% or above. To register for the quiz, send an email to studyabroad@northwestern.edu with "Study Abroad 101" in the subject line. Include your name and net ID in the email. Starting Oct 3rd, all students are eligible to take the SA 101 quiz provided they have:
    • Sent an email to studyabroad@northwestern.edu requesting to be registered for the quiz; and
    • Received a confirmation email from the Study Abroad Office notifying them they have been registered
  2. After you successfully completed the quiz, you may come to the Study Abroad Office to obtain the Application for Permission to Study Abroad on a Non-Northwestern Summer Program. The deadline to pick up this application is February 15.
  3. All students must schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Adviser to discuss program plans.
  4. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
    • Have approximately a 3.0 GPA
    • Have school and departmental backing as well as parental/guardian approval
    • Meet any extra requirements stipulated by the study abroad programs themselves. (These requirements are outlined in the program literature. Most often they are language requirements.)
  5. Applicants must read the following section on the academic and financial logistics of study abroad on a non-Northwestern summer program:
    Financial Information
    Academic Information
It is the student's responsibility to know the information contained on these pages.
  6. In addition to the general requirements above, each school at Northwestern has its own specific policies for study abroad, which are outlined in specific school letters. To read the letter from your school, click here.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
All students who wish to earn credit for study abroad—whether it is for a term-length program, full academic year, or a SUMMER program--MUST apply to Northwestern for permission to study abroad by the appropriate Northwestern application deadline PRIOR to the commencement of the program. Retroactive applications for study abroad credit of any kind will NOT be accepted. This is to ensure that students find appropriate programs offering coursework that may transfer back to Northwestern University and are able to take full advantage of the support services offered on campus prior to departure.
