1.
Step 1: Take the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard.
- To register for the quiz, email studyabroad@northwestern.edu with "Study Abroad 101" in the subject line. Include your name and NetID in the email.
- Be patient! Registration takes places once a week, and you will receive a confirmation email with instructions at that time. You can take the quiz as many times as needed to score a 90% or above.
- NOTE: Students planning on applying to a Northwestern-run summer program only do NOT need to complete the Quiz and should instead consult the individual summer program pages for application instructions.
Step 2: After successfully earning a 90% or above on the quiz, stop by the Study Abroad Office (630 Dartmouth Place) to pick up the NU Application for Permission to Study Abroad. This application is not available online and must be picked up in person. Applications for Summer 2009 and the 2009-2010 academic year will be available in early Fall 2008.
Step 3: (Strongly recommended) Schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Adviser to discuss program options and specific concerns. For students interested in studying abroad on a Non-Northwestern summer program, this step IS required and students should plan on meeting with a study abroad advisor well in advance of the March 5 summer deadline.
Step 4: Apply to study abroad.
- June 2: Winter/Spring 2009 application deadline
- Deadlines for 2009-10 will be posted in Fall 2008.

2. Complete the applications for the study abroad
programs to which you are applying and send them directly
to the programs by their deadlines. You are responsible
for knowing these deadlines, so make sure to read the program
brochures early in your research process. Applications for
most affiliated programs are available at the Study Abroad
Office.
3. Complete the Northwestern application
for permission to study abroad by the Northwestern deadline.
Application deadlines for study abroad during 2008-2009 are:
| Fall/Full Year Study Abroad: |
1st Week of February |
| |
(day depends on your last name) |
| Winter-Spring Study Abroad: |
1st Week of June |
Please check the calendar for exact dates.
Tip: Start filling out the application at least
two months before the deadline, because there are a lot of
details to take care of that involve other people (getting
a transcript from the Office of the Registrar and a recommendation
from a faculty member, meeting with advisers, etc.).
4. The Study Abroad Office and the University Study Abroad
Committee will review your application and contact you approximately
two months after the application deadline. If your application
is preliminarily approved, we will send you a letter via email.
This letter will explain the pre-departure requirements that
you must fulfill to receive official approval to study abroad
(e.g., attending pre-departure orientation, submitting pre-departure
forms, possibly taking a language course the quarter before
you leave, etc.). If your application is denied, we will send
you a letter via email explaining the reasons for the denial,
the appeals process, and any alternative options that might
exist for you to study abroad.
Note: The program(s) to which you apply will contact
you directly regarding your application status. Preliminary
approval by Northwestern does not constitute acceptance into
a particular program.
5. Once you have satisfactorily completed all pre-departure
requirements, you will be officially approved by Northwestern
to study abroad.
