Extending Your Study Abroad Term
Northwestern encourages students to study abroad for the full year, and if you would like to extend your stay, you may be able to do so.
Complete the steps below; if you are approved to extend your stay, the Study Abroad Office will email you an updated approval letter.
1. Contact your program.
Determine if it is possible to extend your stay, including applicable deadlines and paperwork.
2. Email your Study Abroad Adviser.
Explain why you would like to extend your term abroad. Your adviser will give you a deadline to complete the following steps. If you don’t know who your adviser is, email studyabroad@northwestern.edu.
3. Email the Assistant Director of Study Abroad Financial Services.
This step is necessary for anyone who receives financial aid through Northwestern. Krista Buda (k-buda@northwestern.edu) can discuss how extending your term might affect your aid package.
4. Email your major/minor adviser for approval.
This step is necessary for students who have a major/minor in WCAS, McCormick and Communication. Be sure to tell him/her:
- You would like to extend your term of study abroad
- The courses you are currently taking and plan to take next term
He or she will need to confirm that your study abroad plans will work well with your overall degree program. If your adviser approves, he or she must email your Study Abroad Adviser stating this approval. More information for your academic adviser(s) can be found in the Faculty/Advisers section.
5. Email your School Representative for approval.
Be sure to tell him/her:
- You would like to extend your term of study abroad
- The courses you are currently taking and plan to take next term
6. Your parent/guardian must provide their approval.
He or she must email your Study Abroad Adviser stating this approval and their understanding that you will be charged the appropriate Study Abroad Administrative Fee for the extended term.
7. Review the University Registration Requirement (URR) Policy to determine if/how your extension would affect your URR.
