Internships and Independent Study/Research Projects

If you did an internship abroad or an independent study/research project (ISP), you are required to submit a copy of your final paper and a cover sheet to the Study Abroad Office.

See below for the detailed list of the requirements upon return for internships or ISPs for credit.

Internship Requirements

  1. Submit a copy of your completed internship paper to the Northwestern Study Abroad Office, accompanied by a cover sheet and an abstract in English. The office will keep this copy for their records.
  2. You will need to provide an additional copy to your academic adviser(s) if you wish to petition for major, minor, or school credit earned from your internship.

Note: If the faculty adviser judges the paper to be of poor quality, there is a possibility that you would receive 0 (zero) credit for your internship course, regardless of the grade you received from the study abroad program. As with all courses taken abroad that are awarded zero credit, an accompanying statement will be posted to the Northwestern transcript stating: "Study Abroad Course: No credit given for non-transferable grade."

ISP Requirements

  1. Submit one copy of your completed ISP paper to the Northwestern Study Abroad Office, along with a cover sheet and an abstract in English.
  2. The office will forward your transcript to the Office of the Registrar only after we have received a copy of your paper. We review all ISPs to ensure that the ISP options offered by our affiliated study abroad programs are meeting Northwestern's academic standards.
  3. You will need to provide an additional copy to your academic adviser(s) if you wish to petition for major, minor, or school credit earned from your research project.

Exceptions:

  • WCAS students must present their research paper or essay to the faculty sponsor as part of the petition process for study abroad credit. The faculty sponsor will fill out section III of the WCAS Petition for Credit for Courses Taken Abroad Form. Speak with your college adviser about the details of this process.
  • If you are seeking major, minor, elective or other departmental credit for your ISP, the faculty adviser in the appropriate department will evaluate your paper, just like regular coursework will be evaluated.
