In this exchange program students enroll directly at ETH-Zurich and take classes together with local and other international students. Ranked among the top 10 universities in the world and boasting 21 Nobel Prize winners associated with the institute, ETH has a well-deserved reputation for state-of-the-art research. ETH is located in Zurich, which is consistently rated as one of the best places in the world to live.  Students are also able to combine research with courses in a wide-range of fields. Northwestern students have the option of studying abroad for a semester or full academic year. Students pay Northwestern tuition and are responsible for travel and all other expenses (including room and board).

Languages: German, English

Language Requirements: 

  • German language proficiency is not required since ETH offers many courses taught in English.
  • For students interested in taking courses taught in German, at least 2 years or the equivalent of college-level German is required.
  • Students interested in taking courses taught in German must meet with Professor John Paluch in the Department of German to assess their language skills prior to application. 


ETH has no accommodations but assists students in finding nearby residence hall-like housing.
