Tokyo: Arts & Sciences at Sophia University
Sponsor: Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Direct enrollment in the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University allows students to study alongside Japanese and other international students in English-taught area studies courses while also participating in intensive Japanese language courses. CIEE offers field trips and a cultural reimbursement program for participation in independent cultural activities.
Program Type: Affiliated
- Full Year
Term Notes: Spring Semester generally begins in late March, so students enroll for Winter Quarter at NU and finish final exams before departure. If students do not take Winter Quarter classes at NU, they must enroll in at least 15 semester credits while abroad.
Languages: Japanese, English
CIEE recommends 1 college-level Japanese language course prior to departure.
Housing:Homestay or a managed housing facility (dorm): Japanese host families provide two meals per day and offer the opportunity to enhance language skills while learning about the society, culture and cuisine. The dorms are co-ed, but the floors may be separated by gender, and members of the opposite sex may not enter these areas of the dorm. Rooms are single accommodation with shared bathrooms, laundry facilities, and lounge areas. There is no meal service in the dorms; students prepare meals on their own in the dorm kitchen. The dorms are located within a 60- to 90-minute commute to Sophia University.
