Direct enrollment at the Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) at Nanzan University through IES Abroad offers independent students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Japanese culture and university life. Nanzan's CJS specializes in intensive Japanese language study as well as area studies courses taught in English and provides field trips to cities of cultural and historical importance as an integral part of the program.

To apply, Northwestern students must:

  1. Complete an NU Study Abroad Application by the appropriate deadline
  2. Complete an IES application by the program's deadline

Languages: Japanese, English

Language Requirements: 

1 year or the equivalent of college-level Japanese


Homestay, off-campus university residence hall for international students or private off-campus co-op houses: Homestay housing details vary by family but you will have a single room, and eat breakfast and dinner each day with your host family and can purchase lunch at student cafeterias on campus, or in restaurants in the area. Nanzan University runs two international residence halls a short distance from campus. Other residence halls (private) are located throughout Nagoya and specifically designed for students and young professionals. All offer single bedrooms with shared common spaces and bathrooms. Meals are not provided, but you will have access to a common kitchen. Privately managed, single-sex co-op houses include facilities specifically designed for students and young professionals. All have private rooms and shared bathrooms with communal showers on each floor. Students pay for electricity in some of the privately managed residence halls and the co-ops. Those with particularly high commuting costs receive a monthly stipend to help defray transportation expenses.
