Pre-Departure Requirements

Approved study abroad students must complete the following requirements prior to departure.

Complete the Pre-Departure Quiz on Blackboard by December 18th.

The Pre-Departure Quiz is designed to review important study abroad policies and to provide you with academic, financial, safety, and cultural information to prepare you for your transition abroad. This quiz is different from the Study Abroad 101 Quiz you took before applying.

To complete this Quiz, log into Blackboard and click "Study Abroad Pre-Departure Orientation." Instructions are provided in Blackboard.

Submit Pre-Departure Forms.

Turn in the Program Confirmation & Health Insurance Coverage form to the Study Abroad Office by Friday, February 5, 2010.

Some students (e.g., McCormick students) will also have to complete additional forms.

Students attending Spring Quarter programs run by the Office of International Program Development will also have to complete additional pre-departure forms for IPD.

Attend the mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation.

This orientation will cover important health, safety, and cultural adjustment issues and will also give you the opportunity to meet and talk with other Northwestern students going abroad.

The Pre-Departure Orientation for students attending Spring Quarter programs run by IPD will be held during Winter Quarter (date, time, and location TBA). IPD will contact these students via email with further details.

Other Northwestern Requirements

Students who do not abide by these requirements risk not earning any credit for their coursework abroad.

Health Insurance

Northwestern University requires all study abroad students to obtain HTH Worldwide health insurance coverage for the period of time they are studying and traveling abroad, regardless of any other coverage they have from their parents, Northwestern, or their study abroad program.

International SOS

All Northwestern University students are also required to register with a security and travel assistance program, International SOS, prior to their period of study abroad. This free service provides students with access to an array of health, safety and other vitally important travel information and email alerts.

Academic & Program Requirements

Northwestern has a number of academic requirements that students are expected to adhere to while studying abroad. Read these requirements over carefully, identify which (if any) apply to you, and make sure you understand and adhere to them.  Northwestern also has additional requirements for some programs, which can be found on your program page.

Academic Performance

Maintain satisfactory academic performance before going abroad, which includes completing any outstanding incompletes. Students placed on academic probation after their applications were approved will not be permitted to study abroad.

Disciplinary Records

Maintain a clean disciplinary record with the Office of Residential Life and the Office of Student Affairs. Students may not be permitted to study abroad if they (a) were on housing or disciplinary probation when they were approved and did not successfully complete the probation, or (b) incurred housing or disciplinary violations after their applications were approved.

Contingencies

Fulfill any contingencies listed in your preliminary approval email. If you no longer have this email, contact the Study Abroad Office.

Internships Abroad for Credit

You must complete an internship petition before the end of Fall Quarter.
