Billing & Payments

This web page covers billing policies and anticipated payments:

Paying Deposits

Northwestern does not pay program deposits for students. If your program requires a confirmation deposit, you are responsible for paying the deposit to the program directly, not to the Study Abroad Office. Deposits are generally non-refundable.

Depending on the program, your deposit will be credited towards either your NU invoice or your housing invoice from the program.

Billing Arrangements

If you are attending an affiliated study abroad program, your family will receive an invoice from Northwestern University for your study abroad program tuition and the Northwestern Study Abroad Administrative Fee (SAAF). Some programs also have room, board, and other charges billed through Northwestern; other programs bill these supplemental charges directly to you. The listing below shows what charges are billed by NU for affiliated programs. (Listings are organized by program provider or host institution, not country.)

With the exceptions listed below, you are responsible for purchasing HTH Worldwide health insurance on your own, regardless of any other health insurance you have through your parents, Northwestern, or your study abroad program.

If you are attending an unaffiliated program, you are responsible for purchasing HTH yourself and paying your program directly for all charges except the SAAF. Northwestern University will only bill you for the SAAF.

Paying for Airfare & Travel Expenses

You are responsible for making your own flight reservations and payments according to your program's specific dates and rules.  Some programs include international group airfare in their program costs. Consult your program office or program literature for more detailed advice, and read the Planning for Overseas Travel page for additional expenses, including flights, passports, visas, and immunizations.
