Academic Initiatives

Professor Seth Stein takes a small group of Northwestern university students kayaking down the Chicago River to get a first hand look at the geological terrain that makes up Chicago. When asked why he decided to sponsor the trip he responded with:

We went kayaking to get a feel for what it was like for the early explorers. When you actually get on the lake, even right off campus, you appreciate what a very big and a very powerful thing it is, in a way that you cannot appreciate just by looking out at the lake.

ISEN

The Initiative for Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern was establishedin 2008 by President Henry Bienen as an umbrella organization whose unique mission is to catalyze the development of transformational science,technology, education and policy for sustainability and energy.  ISEN meets this challenge through interdisciplinary training, research, and local and global outreach. Environmental Policy and Culture

Environmental issues and conflicts are emerging as among the most important concerns of the twenty-first century.  The Program in Environmental Policy and Culture (EPC) is an interdisciplinary minor focusing on the study of the relationship between people and their natural surroundings. The program is based in the social sciences and humanities and is open to all Northwestern undergraduate students.
