Student Life
Our students, known as "Midshipmen" are full-time students at Northwestern University preparing to become officers in the Navy or Marine Corps. They enjoy all the benefits and responsibilities of other Northwestern students with the added advantage of belonging to our team.
Members of NROTC are often actively engaged with other aspects of life on campus. Midshipmen have been sorority/fraternity presidents and vice presidents, varsity athletes, contributors to Northwestern publications, and club members, among other things.
Midshipmen at Northwestern University have unique opportunities to travel (for summer training, leadership conferences, and drill meets) forming special bonds and cohesiveness through activities such as intramural teams, the sail team, the drill team, dining-in, and the military ball. Click here to read an article about one midshipman's recent summer cruise travel (.doc).
In an effort to best serve the needs of the Navy, the Navy requires that 65% of all Navy Option scholarship midshipmen be enrolled in a technical major of some kind. Scholarships will be awarded by the Navy first to candidates intending to pursue a major within the first tier, followed by those intending to pursue a major in the second tier, followed by the third tier in turn. Examples of majors within each tier include, but are not limited to, the following:
|
Tier 1:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Nuclear Engineering
- Ocean Engineering
- Systems Engineering
|
Tier 2
- Astrophysics
- Chemistry
- Computer Engineering
- Construction Engineering
- Mathematics
- Oceanography
- Physics
- Statistics

Midshipmen receive specialized instruction to prepare them for service in the Navy and Marine Corps. Active duty Navy and Marine Corps officers teach students about naval history and tradition, leadership and ethics, and current issues relating to today's military. Every midshipman receives specialized mentorship and advising on topics from choice of academic major to career choice. Professional tutoring is provided for topics like Calculus and Physics. Because you are a part of our team, our staff is on hand to ensure your academic and military success.
In addition to their studies, midshipmen lead the way on campus in giving back to the Chicago community. Students participate in a number of Veteran's Day events in the Evanston area. On campus, our students frequently participate in events like fraternity or sorority community service and Northwestern's famous Dance Marathon.
Our battalion has the unique advantage of terrific support from their alumni. Each year the Northwestern NROTC Scholarship Foundation donates thousands of dollars to deserving midshipmen through scholarship awards. Contributions from alumni help subsidize special events, finance improvements to the midshipman lounge, and purchase improvements to the midshipman computer lab.
