Ever eager to discuss their groups’ activities and learn more about Northwestern Alumni Association programs, more than 80 alumni club leaders from around the country traveled to the Evanston campus in October for the NAA’s annual leadership conference. During the three-day event, the organization honored the NU Club of the San Francisco Bay Area and the NU Club of Sarasota/Manatee (Fla.) with its Club of the Year awards. The NU Club of Philadelphia received the NAA’s Renaissance Award.
Members of the NU Club of Chicago attended legendary jazz saxaphonist Von Freeman’s 80th birthday all-star performance at Symphony Center in October.
Later in the month, 75 members gathered at Chicago’s Garfield Park Conservatory for a private viewing of glass artist Dale Chihuly’s garden exhibit, which was followed by a dessert reception. The club also co-sponsored an evening viewing of “Northwestern Explores/The Last Expression: Art and Auschwitz,” a multimedia presentation at the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art on the Evanston campus.
More than 60 alumni from the New York City area turned out in the summer for the NU Club of Greater New York’s third annual wine tasting event at the Opal Bar, where leaders presented the Doron Abosch Memorial Scholarship Award to School of Communication junior Colleen Clemency of Manhasset, N.Y. Mr. Abosch (WCAS86) was a founder of the Young Alumni Club in New York and died in 1991. The need-based scholarship is given to an outstanding junior in the New York area.
